As my graduation thesis, this project focused on revitalizing the walkability of Taipei’s eastern district without altering the existing building stock. I proposed solutions such as redesigning the road traffic system to reduce car flows and reallocating space to widen pedestrian sidewalks. Recognizing motorcycles as a unique aspect of Taiwanese culture, I introduced a "buffer zone" concept to prevent motorcycles from encroaching on bicycle lanes, enhancing opportunities for sustainable mobility and safer streets.
To further optimize pedestrian-friendly spaces within the district’s limited footprint, I developed a concept inspired by Barcelona’s superblock model. By restricting car access to designated road exits, the inner areas between buildings could be transformed into entirely pedestrianized zones. Additionally, I proposed a new development rights transfer policy that reimagines ground-level parking spaces as public spaces. This approach incentivizes developers by providing value in exchange for creating shared urban environments, ultimately enhancing both the urban landscape and overall property value. This project demonstrates how innovative planning and design strategies can unlock the potential of densely developed areas to prioritize people over vehicles.
