Residential Design

This project was a government-funded public housing initiative organized by the National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center, funded by Huang Hsiang Construction Corporation, and carried out in collaboration with Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office. The project comprised a public housing building paired with a private residential development. While Akihisa Hirata's office developed the design concept, our office acted as the executive architect. My role included overseeing the realization and execution of the project and planning the B1-2 public housing, ensuring that the design vision was effectively implemented.

I was responsible for the planning of all spaces in the public building areas on B1-2, including both private residential units and public spaces, as well as the layout of the rooftop garden. Given the modular nature of this social housing apartment, I proposed efficient spatial arrangements to balance functionality and livability. For instance, single-aspect units were designed as one-bedroom apartments, while corner units featured dual-aspect lighting for two-bedroom layouts. The staircase and hallway layouts were optimized for spatial efficiency, aligning with Akihisa Hirata’s vision of integrating urban greenery through spiral configurations. This approach maximized the usability of both public and private spaces while maintaining a cohesive and sustainable design.

The project spanned from B3 to 16F and posed a challenge in balancing idealistic design with practical realities. The investor prioritized maximizing floor area for economic viability, which conflicted with the initial concept of incorporating extensive green spaces. I facilitated negotiations between the architect and the investor to address this tension, ultimately reaching a compromise that incorporated greenery into the rooftop design. This solution not only preserved the essence of the design but also fostered positive relationships with neighboring communities, exemplifying a thoughtful integration of urban living and environmental considerations.
